Halloween Crafting!

With Halloween fast approaching I have been working on costumes for my two kids.  My daughter is going to be a ballerina for Halloween and my son is going to be a fireman!

For my daughter's costume I simply made a tutu for her to wear along with a onesie, leggings, babylegs and little ballet slippers!  To make the tutu I followed one of the many tutu tutorials out there.  Simply google tutu tutorial and you will find SO many tutorials on how to make a simple tutu, like this one or this one or even this video.  They are SO easy to make you don't even have to sew.  However, I did sew mine, but it took like 20 seconds, I choose to sew my elastic together, but even with sewing it was SO easy!!!

My son choose to be a fireman! I wanted to make something for him to wear instead of buying a costume that he would never wear again.  My plan was to make a pair of fleece pants and put a red cuff along the bottom of each pant (after Halloween they can be pajama pants!).  For his top I would buy a black long sleeve shirt (thank you Walmart) and attach a cuff along each arm in the same color, red!  To complete the costume I bought a red fireman hat and we were going to cut a section of hose for him to carry as well!  If I can find a little Dalmatian stuffed animal dog for him to carry he will have that and maybe a pretend hatchet, although I haven't been able to find one, so maybe I will try to make one!

So, the first step was to make his fleece pants for his costume.  I had never made pants so I have been searching for a simple tutorial on making pants for a child.  After doing some searching I found a great tutorial here.  Love the Fleece Fun website for several reasons, the patterns are free, they are easy to put together, great pictures, great directions and video's if you need more help! I was able to cut, sew and have completed pants in about 30 minutes.  The only thing that held me up a bit was preparing and then attaching the red cuff at the bottom of the pants.  The amazing thing, was that the pants fit him, perfectly, I love it when that happens!  I had bought 1 yard of fabric and had enough left over to make my son a second pair of pants and my daughter a pair of fleece pants.  I still have a little bit of fleece left that I will use to make a cute ribbon hat, also found on the Fleece Fun website!  I will let you know how that goes!

I will post pics once I get the kids into their costumes and get pics of them!

Happy Halloween

Sarah
